Introduction
The Yian Kut-Ku is a fire elemental Bird Wyvern. Yian Kut-Kus are pink in colour with blue web webbing and a great yellow beak. They're the smallest among the Wyverns and generally faster thanks to their small size. They can throw fireballs over a small distance and harbor feelings of hatred for loud noises.
Basic Strategy
- Paintballs last 10 minutes under normal circumstances!
As soon as you come into the area the kut ku is in, sneak up on him and throw a paintball while he hasn't noticed you. He'll turn around and wonder what just happened and do nothing for a few seconds. Now with whatever melee weapon you got attack his left wing or legs. His left wing because his tail spin is always counter clock-wise. Remember that!
The kut ku will most of the time hop into a direction and do a triple peck at the ground (you). This attack can be evaded by running and rolling away to the left or right. Once evaded attack his head or left wing before he makes a turn and then roll to the right in case he might use his tail spin again.
The Kut ku can also throw fire balls. Which deal small damage in general, and they cover only a small distance. Maybe 10 feet or something. They're easily evaded by staying either to the sides of the kut ku, keeping a good distance from him and by rolling to the sides. The kut ku also has a quadruple fire ball attack but he does it rarely. He spits 4 fire bals in front of him with in a curve of 180 degrees. If he does this last you can safely attack his wings from the sides or his legs from behind. Nothing can happen as long as you're not in front of him.
The Kut ku will jump into the air and fly at you if you're far away, do not try to counter this attack. Just run to the left or right and roll. Follow the kut ku once he has passed you and while he's recovering from his landing try getting some hit on his legs and roll away again and he will turn at you and probably charge at you or do another tail spin.
Once the kut ku has taken enough damage it will go into rage mode. He'll show it by him rising his head and wings and jumps a few times like a crazy burned bird. His speed and attack power will be doubles now. From this point he'll do his charge much more often, now it's very fast and if you can't run/roll out of the way just dive or block it. The battle strategy goes like written above this part, except you need to be more cautious.
Once the Kut ku is nearing death, which is indicated by his ears who will go into weak pose again, go all out again him. He'll limp away and try to flee to another area trying to sleep and regain health. If you got flash bombs run in front of him and throw them all and keep attacking, once the effect wears of throw another and repeat. Till he dies, which shouldn't take very long from this point. May he get away just follow him and kill him in the area where he stops. Also, as he's about to fly off, a well timed sonic bomb should knock him back to the ground. (Don't expect a shiny)
Weapon-Specific Strategies
Greatsword
The Greatsword has very high damage and can block, making it a well-rounded weapon. Some hunters complain about the Greatsword's lack of speed, the thing that they do not realize is that after attacking one can dodge roll out of the way, thus reducing the GS's lag time. AS long as you remember to dodge roll, beating the Kut-Ku with the Greatsword should be no problem. As soon as the battle starts, paint the Kut-ku. Follow up with a running slash and dodge roll as soon as possible. Continue with a hit and run strategy if you feel like it, or keep dishing out a series of blows with the GS's never ending combo (Triangle, Circle, Triangle, Circle). Eventually after dealing enough damage(Or using a sonic bomb) the Kut-ku will enter rage mode. Should you get him into rage without using a sonic bomb, he will jump up and down and then fire will begin to spew from his mouth. Once in rage mode, the Kut-Ku will become even more dangerous. His speed will increase and he will be far more powerful. In addition to speed and power, he will start using a four-shot fireball attack. When he uses his four shot fireball attack, it is a perfect time to get a good combo or charge attack. From this point on, I would suggest using a hit and run strategy unless you are good at dodge rolls. Eventually, his ears will fold back, he will start to limp, and he will take off to the air and fly away to a different area. Now is the time to strike! Follow him to the area and kill everything around him that is hostile. If you brought any barrel bombs, you can use them now. Simply walk up to the Kut-ku and lay down two large barrel bombs. Then, set down a small barrel bomb next to the two and run like hell! Since the Kut-ku was asleep, the bombs will hit him for three times the normal damage! If this doesn't finish the bugger off, simply use a charge attack or two and finish the job. Don't worry about him moving too fast as he will be limping. Once he's down, carve him up and celebrate your victory!
Longsword
For the 2 Star Village Yian Kut Ku, a Blango Destroyer/ Blango Destroyer+ is enough to kill it with ease, even an Iron Katana should do the trick. Firstly paintball it when you find it. Try to avoid his attacks, and attack with caution as he is quite fast, and being continuously hit can take a lot out of your HP. Using a sonic is fine, but it will almost always result in him going into rage mode. Don't get too greedy with the combos, instead maxing out your spirit bar for the attack boost helps a lot. If you target it's legs, it will eventually fall, and you'll have a few seconds of free hits, during which you can use the spirit combo and target his face. Keep knocking him down and you will eventually kill him.
Another helpful hint would be to stay under the Kut-Ku's legs because under them you are safe from all his attacks except the charge.
And also Ice/Water weapons are recommended as the person before me has mentioned.
And I agree with the not using the sonic bombs until you are used to the Kut-Ku's attacks because and enraged monster becomes, faster, has higher attack, and flinches less.
Hammer
Seeing as how the Hammer has no defensive capabilities (short of hitting the attacking monster and praying that it flinches first), a hit-and-run strategy is in order for first-time and novice hunters. This simple tactic involves using the charge on the hammer and using the swinging bashes (the attacks that occur BEFORE the final charge) when an opportunity arises, and the triple pound or fully-charged attacks when the monster is stunned in some form or fashion.
Now, weak though the Kut-ku is, it's not something to laugh at: even veteran hunters have been known to be beat down by a cheesed-off Kut-ku if they get cocky. That being said, you just need to remember to keep your distance during the beginning of its attacks, and move in with a charge starting when it finishes. This basically guarantees that you'll get a hit or two in between each attacks (and remember, as with all boss monsters, roll out of the way RIGHT after the attack, just to be safe). Since you're using the immense power of the hammer, your main target should be the head whenever possible. Why? Well, if you didn't learn already, the Hammer has the ability to KO monsters and leave them defenseless for a good deal of time, allowing you to get in some much needed hits (or barrel bombs). As previously stated, use the semi-charged swing attacks to get the damage to rack up on the wyvern's face until it's either KO'd, knocked over, or both. Once this occurs, do what this weapon does best - Bring the hammer down!
Also, if you don't feel that you can get hits in easily while its enraged, now is a good time to stun it with a flash bomb or two. Granted, the Kut-ku can still hit you from time to time while confused, but this is easily avoided if you wait until the beast starts its next motion. This way, you can still get some fully charged hits in, but without the hassle of a sudden attack or spin.
Keep up this strategy, and even with bad sharpness, this shouldn't be a long fight. Happy Hunting!
Hunting Horn
Fighting the Kut-Ku with a Hunting Horn is practically the same strategy as fighting it with the Hammer. Focus mainly on attacking his head and hope for a KO or a flinch. Focus on the head and keep the blows coming. Dodge roll whenever necessary. Your main worry should be it's tailspin. If you are in the middle of a swing and he starts a tail spin, you'll have to take to blow. Otherwise, just keep attacking and don't let up.
Lance
Using a lance while fighting a Kut-Ku is quite easy.I recommend hitting the head, the tail and the wings.while he is doing his tail spin press X a few times and MOVE away,UNEQUIP your lance RUN to him and POKE away! Keep doing this till he enters rage mode.In rage mode his attacks are double painful and faster. So poke him at least 3 times. the steps are ATTACK , UNEQUIP ,and RUN.if you are cornered, GUARD. So far i killed more than 15 yian kut-kus already using the 3 steps.
Gunlance
While using the Gunlance I would have to personally say that shelling is the best technique. What you should do is paintball the Kut-Ku. After that, draw your gunlance and shield. Wait for the first attack then, while defending, stab, stab, shoot, and defend, wait for an attack, then again, stab, stab, shoot, and defend (Use this until you run out of shells). Remember to always aim for the Kut-Ku's beak or legs. And if you are a beginner I recommend bringing potions and herbs. And also even if you're not a beginner always heal when your health is halved.
Sword & Shield
First things first,PAINTBALL THE BEAST. Using a SnS on a kut-ku is easy but may take a little while since a SnS's attacks are small. To start, hit it in the head a few times then roll.As the other guides say, when hitting the legs, hit the right leg because his tail spin is counter-clockwise.
I recommend hitting these parts-
1.Head 2.Wings 3.Tail
Dual Swords
First, get a good set of dual swords, either ice or water (the Kut-Ku is -2 against each) or good raw damage ones. Giaprey Claws or Cool Daggers and their upgrades for ice or Order Rapiers and its upgrades for water are recommended. You could also try Snow Venom (MHP2G only) as it has both ice and poison attributes (for a little bit of extra damage). These are just recommendations but not necessary because Kut-Ku's are very weak and have relatively low HP.
Prepare yourself with your normal potions or herbs or what not, and make sure to bring Power Juice or Mega Juice, as these will allow you to Demonize infinitely (or at least until the Power or Mega Juice runs out) If you don't have Power or Mega Juice, using Rations or meats to get your stamina to full 150 will do.
When you find the Kut-Ku, paintball him and go straight to fighting. Remember to use your Power or Mega Juice. Go into Demonization mode (Press R) and attack his left side (or else he will likely tail spin you on his right side) and do the Triangle + Circle Combo (Devilish Dance) or just Circle (Double Roundhouse) to deal major damage. Keep on doing this while dodging his attacks. The dual swords can't block so you will have to rely on good dodging techniques. If he flies up and you are in Demonization mode, you will not be affected by his wind, so you can wait until he lands and then land a good combo on his head or wings. If you ever knock him over, make sure to do a Devilish Dance combo on his head.
When he goes into rage, you will have less time to land Devilish Dance combos, but you can still use Double Roundhouse or just the normal Triangle combo. If he uses his four shot fireball attack, you have a perfect opportunity to land a few good combos on him. The trick is to constantly attack and try to do as much damage as possible without him hitting you. (Isn't that always the strategy?)
When he limps away, follow him and kill kim on his way to sleeping, or get a combo on his head when he is asleep. If you want to capture him (highly recommended because you get MUCH better rewards) wait till he sleeps, lay a shock trap right next to him, wake him up with a kick or something, and when he wakes up, he will be in the trap. Throw 2 Tranq Bombs anywhere on him and you got him.
Light Bowgun
Its totally easy that a noob can kill a kut-ku using any type of bowgun(light and heavy). The secret to the bowgun is AMMO SELECTION.Using crag S,you will stun him,so this is an alternative of a sonic bomb.Just hit the head, wings and whatever but i recommend the head and the wings more.Sometimes in a particular part of the jungle and forest and hills area, there are high areas a yian kut-ku's fireball attack can't reach, use this to your advantage by not getting hit.
Heavy Bowgun
Killing a Kut-Ku with a Heavy Bowgun might be even easier than with a Light Bowgun. It might cost a bit more though because you need to bring lots of ammo, including Normal, Pierce, Pellet, Crag and Clust. Elemental and Status Affecting ammo might help, but I didn't use them. Also remember to ROLL. Never just run. You need to roll, because the Kut-Ku's a fast mover. When you roll, though, don't roll straight at him, or straight to the side. Roll around him, until you reach a safe, prime shooting spot. Then you can shoot him to your heart's content.
When you meet the Kut-Ku, paintball him. He tends to fly away a lot. The best thing to do is unload your Pellet Shots at him. Pellet shots are usually most effective as they can hit with a spray, like a shotgun. You need to be close to the Kut-Ku, though, so take care. The best position to take when fighting him is to the side, but still close to his head. That way, you pellets will hit him in the head, neck and wing. (Sometimes maybe only head-neck, or neck-wing.) In reality, though, any type of bullet will suffice when you fight him. When using Peirce, hit him straight in the face so that it will pass all the way through to his tail.
When you shift to Pierce, try hitting him straight in the face so that the bullet pierces all the way through him, up to the tail. That way, he's hit the most number of times possible. Crags have the same effect as Sonic Bombs, but do damage. So when you want to stun him, either throw a bomb to conserve your Crags, or shoot a Crag to deal some nasty damage. (It's best to shoot him in the head with Crag, so as to deal some mighty damage. Also, remember that he goes into rage when you Crag or Bomb.) Use your Clusts when he sleeps to do huge damage.
Oh, and only AIM when you want to hit him in the head with Crag or Pierce. The secret to aiming is not getting greedy. Press L to aim, hit him with Crag once, and roll away. With Pierce, you can unload a whole clip before you need to roll away. Measure for yourself how many shots you can get in. This is why I recommend using Pellet most of the time. With Pellet, you needn't aim against the Kut-Ku. Using Normal or Pierce, you can opt not to aim, but the only place you'll hit him is in the wing (it's the only place you'll reach, and you might even miss sometimes.)
Bow
Circle the Kut-Ku aiming mostly to the head, so you can break them. Then once you break them aim for it's back. It won't break but I find if you hit it on the back and wings it normally flinches more. You could hit it on it's ears but it could, possibly damage you more than it because you would be directly in front of it's run and fire, so it would be best to circle and hit it in the back of the back!
Bring: power vials x50 (if using weak bow, no need for paralysis unless because if you do when you paralysis, etc. it you will just be wasting money because by the time you do it will be almost dead and you could just regular attack it.) Food (I recommend eating at kitchen if you are doing your first high rank Kut-Ku)
Lovely now go fight your first darn kut-ku noobs! LoL, Jk --Pyr0626 22:03, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Element Information
The Yian Kut ku is weaker to weapons that have the Ice, Water or Thunder element.
If you decide to use an ailment, your best bet are Poison or Stun.
The Stun effect immobilizes the monster for a decent period of time making it much safer for you to go all out on it. If you have Large Barrel Bombs, now is the time.
Armor Suggestions
As said above the YKK is a Fire type bird wyvern. Meaning his attacks will have the fire element imbued in them. For an armor you'd want to pick one with positive fire resistance. And mediocre raw defence.
Vespoid/Hornetaur armor isn't a wise choice. Bone armor would do better.
Body Part Damage
This is how strong the body parts are, amount of damage you will deal by attacking these points is self-explanatory.
- Head: Weak Point.
- Neck: Decent.
- Wings: Weak Point.
- Stomach: Weak Point.
- Legs: Decent.
- Tail: Decent.
The kut ku isn't quite an armored monster, he takes descent damage on most of the points you can attack.
Breakable Part(s)
Despite not having any removable parts, the ears are breakable. Simply do enough damage to the head, and the ears will break eventually. You'll know when this happens, since the ears get a battered look to them.

Training School guide
SnS: Basic tutorial, put your rats on and get out of room when you get in there throw your sonic and slash away till the poison thing appears on his head. Easy enough aye? Well then when he does the run move run underneath him (also possible when doing the tail whip)then place your bomb hit bomb with boomerang, KK go boom, you laugh, and throw the boomerang till it breaks! Tadaa!!!
Greatsword: Basic strategy hit it with upswing, sidesweep, etc. then wait till it runs charge right at the tip of the tail because a good lesson learned with monsters that turn you gotta REMEMBER THE DARN TAIL! If he hits you with it, all chance of hitting his ears will be lost, so therefore charge where his tail shall not pimp slap you! LoL
Hammer: Hard first fight if you are a beginner because you need to charge slam him but since you beginners don't really have the experience doing that go for the triple pound when you can (super charge is the R button until you swing it up then down and the ground will kinda shake kinda' like when a conga does a belly flop) take the power juice because you don't have rats, and keep super charging. IF HE FALLS ON THE GROUND WITH THE 3*S OVER IT'S HEAD TRIPLE POUND IT LIKE YOU WOULD HITTING YOUR SISTER (OR BROTHER)!!!!!!!!!
Lance: OH, GOD NO!!!!!!! Ok I am not good with lance all I have for you is do the up jab the 3 times you can then back up once do it again. If there is a sonic bomb in your inventory (I don't know if there is one I don't like Lance or GunLance) and hit it till it dies. Mostly hit the head but the tail is a good place too!
Light Bowgun: O, Boy my favorite weapon to KK!! Easy peasy, Crag shot it, it works like a sonic bomb so if you see it waving back and forth you did it, now load the pierce shot hit it till they all are gone (I forget if there is more than level 1 but if so start on the higher pierce shot), this is an easy fight as far as keeping him busy so you can whoop him like OJ did his kids, since there is many crags you can fight him on the platform just remember if you run out of crags get off and fight him, like bwuce wee, LoL!!!!
Easy Light bowgun strategy
Eat your rations, Equip Normal S Lv2 (it rapidfires 5 shots in one ammo), when you enter the fighting area, opposite to you is a ledge, get on there and as far back as possible, this will help you evade all of kut ku's attacks except for fireballs. Now just spam 5 hits per shot using Normal lv2 into its wings or head and you should beat it in 2 minutes or less.
