Welcome to Discussion of the Week: Statuses/Mechanics!
I'm back (not that I was ever really away) and this week I thought we'd look at something quite different to the norm. Something that tends to mentioned in the same tone as voice as tapeworm infestation... I am of course referring to statuses.
Hunter Statuses[]
Secondary Status Effects[]
Icon | General Information
(MHF/MHP3/MH3G) (MH3) |
Name | Poison / 毒 |
Appeared in | MHF2, MHFU, MH3, MHP3, MH3G, MHFO
Description | ||
A common status effect that causes a gradual loss of health over a period of time. Once the poison has worn off, the red portion of your health bar will recover slowly. Depending on the monster and the difficulty of the quest, the poison can drain the health bar at a faster rate than normal and last longer. The duration of a poison can be increased, decreased, or negated altogether with an appropriate skill. Poison is indicated visually by purple bubbles emitting from the victim.
Remedy | Antidote, Bitterbug (50%), Antidote Herbs (50%), Herbal Medicine, wait it out
This Status Effect is inflicted by
Ioprey, Remobra, Wroggi, Rathalos, Azure Rathalos, Silver Rathalos, Rathian, Pink Rathian, Gold Rathian, Gypceros, Purple Gypceros, Iodrome, Espinas, Chameleos, Yian Garuga, Gigginox, Basarios, Gravios, Purple Ludroth, Great Wroggi, Lucent Nargacuga, Unknown (Black Flying Wyvern), Taikun Zamuza.
(MHF/MHP3/MH3G) (MH3) |
Name | Paralysis / 麻痺 |
Appeared in | MHF2, MHFU, MH3, MHP3, MH3G, MHFO
Description | ||
A status effect that completely immobilizes you for a certain amount of time. Upon being paralyzed, a hunter will fall down on their face (or remain motionless in an arched position underwater) and yellow sparks of lightning will be seen passing through their body. The duration of paralysis can be increased, decreased, or negated altogether with an appropriate skill. There is nothing a hunter can do but to wait for the paralysis to wear off or for certain attacks to send them flying. This status effect had been previously known as "Stun" in the early Monster Hunter games, but has recently been referred to as "Paralysis" to better differentiate it from the ailment caused by Flash Bombs and hammer attacks.
Remedy | Attack that causes knockback, wait it out
This Status Effect is inflicted by
Vespoid, Genprey, Cephalos, Bnahabra, Great Thunderbug, Queen Vespoid, Gendrome, Cephadrome, Khezu, Red Khezu, Kirin, White Fatalis, Gobul, Doragyurosu, Volvidon, Baleful Gigginox
(MHF/MHP3) (MH3) (MH3G) |
Name | Sleep / 睡眠 |
Appeared in | MHF2, MHFU, MH3, MHP3, MH3G, MHFO
Description | ||
Some monsters have the potential to put hunters to sleep. It is similar to paralysis in that it leaves the player unable to do anything. However, damage taken when asleep is greatly increased and will end the status after one hit. The duration of sleep can be increased, decreased, or negated altogether with an appropriate skill. In MH3, P3rd and 3G, you do not immediately fall asleep when sleep is inflicted. Instead, the hunter will become drowsy allowing an Energy Drink to be used if the player is fast enough, negating the effect before passing out.
Remedy | Get hit once, Energy Drink (MH3), wait it out
This Status Effect is inflicted by
Baggi, Basarios, Gravios, Hypnocatrice, Plesioth, Shakalaka, Great Baggi, Uragaan, Qurupeco, Crimson Qurupeco.

Name | Stun / 気絶 |
Appeared in | MHF2, MHFU, MH3, MHP3, MH3G, MHFO
Description | ||
Occurs when a player takes many hits in a short period of time. When stunned/knocked out, you will become unable to move and swirling stars are seen above the character's head. All monsters can inflict stun by means of repeated physical attacks, but some monsters can inflict it immediately by emitting an extremely bright flash of light or another special technique. When a monster is inflicted with it by use of a Flash Bomb, it attacks randomly until the effect wears off and if inflicted by repeated hammer attacks, the monster stays down for some time. The duration of the stun can be increased, decreased, or negated altogether with an appropriate skill. By rotating the analog stick used for movement in a circular motion and tapping the evasion button, the player can snap out of it much faster.
Remedy | Repeatedly rotate the left analog stick and tap X (PSP) or A (Wii), either shake the Wii Remote or Nunchuck rapidly

Giggi | ||
Name | Crystallization | |
Appeared in | MHFO | |

Movement isn't hindered, but hunters affected by slime suffer a damaging explosion if struck by a monster, or if the slime isn't rid of quickly by rolling a few times. Even blocked attacks can inflict this status. When affected, all blocking attempts will also fail so it is advised to pay attention to the status icons next to the hunter's name.

This Status Effect is inflicted by
Brachydios |
Questions[]
- Do you have a favourite? No? How odd.

Regular Dragonblight lowers affinity by roughly 25% while Severe Dragonblight lowers roughly 50% (both numbers are estimates, please confirm exact numbers).

This Status Effect is inflicted by
Deviljho, Ceadeus, Goldbeard Ceadeus, Alatreon, Stygian Zinogre |
Questions[]
- Are these a cool idea, or just really annoying? Should they come back in future games?
Others[]
K.O: First introduced in MH2, for the first time Hunters could dizzy the monsters instead of the other way around. How to do it? Repeated bashes to the head, of course. The question is, did this initially make Hammers too overpowered? They did a lot of damage anyway, but a pair of free Triple Pounds whilst the enemy is writhing on the floor...
Then in 3rd gen the vast majority of weapons can now KO - it's just that most of them are exceedingly bad at it (try KO'ing Alatreon with a Lance. Or SnS. Go on).
Stamina: Now, I really like the Stamina mechanic. I feel it adds a touch of realism to proceedings, and you can always learn more about the monster and their habits from the way they recover stamina.
The biggest drawback, IMO, is that some monsters are made way too easy when they just stand there drooling for about 5 minutes non-stop, and Tigrex especially, falling over the whole time, just sucks the challenge straight out. Do people want it back in the future? Personally I'd be ok with monsters keeping the fun stamina recovery animations, but loosing the whole 'stand there dribbling for 5 minutes' thing.
Monster vs Monster: Promised for the third gen, and to my eternal disappointment it never really exceeds what could be seen in the very first Japanese MH3 demo - basically sometimes Great Jaggi and buddies will attack Qurupeco. That's it. I think in P3 Furogi will sometimes attack Nargacuga, but that doesn't really console me. Why no Gigginox vs Barioth when they meet in the Tundra? Why Jinouga vs Rathian in the Mountain Peaks? Sigh.
