Hello, and welcome to Discussion of the Week: Winter Wonderland!

Wow, I'm a bit rusty at this. But, it's that time of year (for those of us in the northern hemisphere, at least). Winter is coming! So let's look back at some snowy places and freezing monsters from across the entire franchise.

I started with Freedom 2, so this is the first ever area I saw, and it'll always hold a special place in my heart. To this day I still think it's a great environment - variety in the low grasslands at the bottom, icy caves in the middle, wind-blasted mountain tops. I just wish it didn't take five minutes to get from base camp to the top.

The third gen equivalent, I also appreciate this place a great deal. A little plain and flat in places, but the caves a…

Hello, and welcome to Discussion of the Week: Skills!

I can't remember if I've already done this one - probably have. But whatever, DotW has been going so long we're bound to recycle sooner or later. For now just roll with it!

One of the most obvious skills, just plain ol' boosts your attack power. Weirdly in my Unite and Tri days I don't remember it being that common; there's some Kut-Ku armor that has it, Monoblos, maybe a few of the 500 different Rathalos sets... but nothing that you'd use all that often.

Ah, that firm favourite - generally speaking, it adds the next colour of sharpness onto your weapon. For example, if the current max is blue, it gets boosted to white, if it's white, it gets boosted to purple. This is very powerful for la…

Hello, and welcome to Discussion of the Week: Towns and Villages!

This week we examine some of the 'central hubs' of Monster Hunter, the places where you spend time inbetween hunts.

The offline town from the very first Monster Hunter (and MH Freedom). From what I've seen, it's a little... bare bones, but perfectly functional. There's some interesting story about the Hero's Blade, and the whole place is at least visually consistant (it reminds me a lot of the Forest and Hills).

The first town I came across in any MH game, and therefore one that invokes considerable nostalgia in me. I like the slight verticality of the place, the farm is nice, everything is quite compact and close, but there's still a really strong underlying aesthetic theme (v…

Hello, and welcome to Discussion of the Week: Returning Monsters!

This week we look at monster that have returned in games considerably after their first appearance. This isn't a comprehensive list - that would include almost every monster in the series - just some of the stand outs.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite -> Monster Hunter 4

Velocidrome was something of a strange choice to return; some would argue that it was replaced pretty comprehensively by the Jaggi in the third generation, but nonetheless it has found its way into the most recent MH game. And in fairness, it is considerably improved - proper rage mode, pin attack, exhaustion mechanics and breakable parts. You can ride it now as well!

    MH2 -> MHF -> MHFU

Yama has a bit of an odd histo…

Hello, and welcome to Discussion of the Week: Strategies!

Something very different this week. Perhaps slightly more controversial.

Sonic Bombs have interesting, if somewhat limited uses. Personally I only bring them to Cephadrome or Plesioth fights, to kick the irritating fish out of the sand/water, though they're also useful for breaking Daimyo's shield move, stunning Yian Kut-Ku, knocking Remobra out of the air and cancelling Qurupeco's songs.

The problem is that (Cephadrome/Plesioth aside) most of the time you'll do more damage just continuing to batter the monster with your weapon, rather than faffing around with sonics. Though I concede they're probably helpful for beginner hunters testing things out.

Plesioth, Gobul and Zamtrios can all …
