Gameplay Overview[]

The latest entry in the critically acclaimed 40 million unit selling action RPG series, Monster Hunter: World introduces a living, breathing ecosystem in which players take on the role of a hunter that seeks and slays ferocious beasts in heart-pounding battles. Venture on quests alone or with up to three other hunters in a newly designed online drop-in multiplayer system which allows cross-region cooperative play between Japan and the West, uniting the global player base for the first time ever. Monster Hunter: World will also be the first game in the series with a worldwide simultaneous launch window and is planned for release on PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system and Xbox One in early 2018. A PC release will follow at a later date.

Monster Hunter: World sees players gear up to venture on quests to battle against fearsome monsters, progressively improving their hunting abilities as they play. Loot collected from fallen foes can be used to create new equipment and armor upgrades as players seamlessly move across map areas that comprise the living ecosystems. The landscape and its diverse inhabitants play a critical role as players strategically use the surrounding environment to their advantage. Hunters must use their intelligence and abilities to survive the intense and evolving fights as they battle to become the ultimate hunter!

Setting[]

Once every decade, elder dragons trek across the sea to travel to the land known as the New World in a migration referred to as the Elder Crossing.

To get to the bottom of this mysterious phenomenon, the Guild has formed the Research Commission, dispatching them in large fleets to the New World.

As the Commission sends its Fifth Fleet in pursuit of the colossal elder dragon known as Zorah Magdaros, one hunter is about to embark on a journey grander than anything they could have ever imagined.

Features[]

  • Welcome to the new World: Taking on the role of a hunter, players are tasked with going on a research expedition to a newly discovered continent known only as “new world” as they venture on quests to discover more about this mysterious land.
  • Astera acts as the hunters' base of operations, it is quite expansive and features many of the facilities common to the villages of past games.
  • Living and breathing ecosystem: Utilize the surrounding environment and wildlife to your advantage. For example, pit monsters against one another to lure the main target creature to the right place, but be careful not to become hindered by the hazards they present.
  • Global simultaneous release: For the first time in the Monster Hunter series the latest title will release within the same launch window and unite hunters across the world with cross-region cooperative play options.
  • Online drop-in multiplayer: When the battle is too daunting to take on single-handedly, hail up to three other hunters to assist during quests by sending up a SOS flare to a worldwide server full of potential teammates.
  • Hunt to craft new gear: Defeat monsters and collect loot from fallen foes to craft equipment and weapons styled after the monsters that have been slain. Selecting the right loadout can help exploit enemy weaknesses to gain an advantage in battle.
  • Master the beasts: A variety of ferocious creatures inhabit the new world landscape including the series mainstay Rathalos and the all new Anjanath. Players can mount the monsters with the dynamic riding mechanic, allowing them to travel along the monster’s body and deliver locational damage.
  • Seamless gameplay: Players and monsters can move from one map area to another freely and without loading screens whilst gameplay also dynamically transitions between night and day.
  • Mantle: Hunters get a new cloak item that can be worn for a certain period of time. Some of these cloaks can allow hunters to use stealth, giving them a chance to sneak up on a monster. Other cloaks can be used to attract monsters to a location.
    • Ghillie Mantle: Conceals you from enemy view temporarily. The effect expires if you perform an attack or take damage.[1]
    • Glider Mantle: Increases jump airtime and grants the power to ride strong winds. Also makes it easier to mount monsters.[2]
    • Rocksteady Mantle: Eliminates damage reactions, prevents wind effects, protects your hearing, and grants tremor resistance. You also receive less damage from attacks.[3]
    • Challenger Mantle: Prompts monsters to target you more often and makes them easier to lure. The effect expires if you are attacked.[4]
  • The Slinger: A new item used in various ways by hunters. This item allows for hunters to fire a grapple hook, allowing them to swing off, or even pull on, objects, as well as fire rocks and other items at foes.
  • Hunters can quickly gather and use items in Monster Hunter: World, unlike previous titles in the series.
  • The Base Camp spawns in random places. Each time a hunt starts, hunters will be at a different Base Camp.
  • Hunters can change weapons and armor midhunt by going to the Base Camp.
    • This feature was added due to quests having several large Monsters in a single Location, and to allow hunters to change their strategy should they decide to stay in an area.
  • Hunters can now hunt freely without being held back by the main objective/quest, even if the quest is complete. Hunters can hunt freely without any limits in an area.
  • Hunters use Scoutflies as guides to help them navigate the area if they can't find the monster and to find certain items, including drool and footprints.
  • Monster attacks can break objects in the area and change the environment during fights.
  • Each large monster in a location has a territory in the a certain area. In some cases, hunters may need to lure another threat into their territory in order to get their target to reveal itself.
  • By hiding from monsters, hunters can avoid fighting them or prepare for a silent escape from the battle.
  • Fauna and flora have been added into Monster Hunter: World.
    • Hunters can interact with flora and fauna in various ways, like the Vigorwasps that can be used to recover health, or the Paratoads which will produce a paralyzing toxin.
    • Hunters can use the Capture Net to capture small animals.
  • The Palico is able to learn different languages from Felyne clans, such as the Grimalkynes, out in the field. This allows the Palico to learn the language of small monsters, like Jagras and Kestodon, and befriend them. During hunts, the Palico may befriend a small monster which will then aid the player.
  • A Wishlist is introduced, Hunters can register equipment pieces they want to craft, this Wishlist displays the equipment's material requirements and can be reviewed at any time, hunters will receive a notification when all the required materials have been obtained.[5]
  • Charms can be crafted and upgraded by using materials.[6]
  • Series Skills: Some armor sets possess a unique skill that can only be obtained by wearing enough pieces of the equipment.[7]
  • The Handler can make meals for the hunter at the Base Camp by using food items, such as Raw Meat.[8]
    • She may also give an additional item like Rations. This depends on the items that the hunter uses.

Notes[]

  • Underwater combat doesn't return in Monster Hunter: World.[9]
  • Palicoes return, but Prowlers doesn't.[10]
  • Hunters now have several ways to approach a hunt, but these don't interfere with the traditional methods.[11]
  • The locations in Monster Hunter: World are separate, however, each location is seamless and features no loading screens between areas.[12]
  • Monster Hunter: World is focused on a western audience and is the next main title game in the series.[13]
  • Originally, it was going to be called "Monster Hunter 5", but the development team really liked the name, "World" (Japanese ワールド).[14]
  • This game has offline play like other Monster Hunter titles.[15]
    • All quests can be done Offline or Online.[16]
    • The story also carries out throughout the entire game.
  • Up to 16 players can be in a single lobby for Monster Hunter: World.[17]
  • Hunters can still form hunting groups with one another, as well as drop in and out of hunts.[18]
  • All 14 weapons from previous titles return in Monster Hunter: World.[19]
  • Damage numbers appear so hunters don't have to play with a spreadsheet at the same time, they can be toggled on and off.[20]
  • For the first time, Monster Hunter: World has cross-region servers. This means that people from around the world can play together, regardless of the region in which they bought the game.[21]
    • This was done to fit with the game's overall theme, an Open World.
    • However, it is not Cross-Platform, meaning Xbox One and Playstation 4 players can't play with each other.
  • All monsters in Monster Hunter: World have a smart AI. This AI gives each monster a unique behavior with which they'll interact with other monsters and the environment.[22]
  • The NPCs are fully voice acted in Monster Hunter: World.[23]
    • Players can also opt to use the fictional language from previous games if they wish so.[24]
  • Monster Hunter: World brings back the in-game keyboard and preset messages.[25]
  • Preset messages will be autotranslated, meaning the same message will appear in the reader's language rather than the sender's.[26]
  • Monster Hunter: World has been in development for four years.[27]
  • There are currently no plans for a Switch version of Monster Hunter: World.[28]
  • Monster Hunter: World supports both 4K and HDR on consoles.[29]
  • The overall concept for Monster Hunter: World was a "living, seamless open world with an ecosystem and a food chain".[30]
  • Hunting Styles and Hunter Arts don't return in Monster Hunter: World.[31]
  • Players have to pay for Playstation Plus in order to play online on PS4.[32]
