Discussion of the Week: Rage Mode

Hello, and welcome... to Discussion of the Week: Rage Mode!

Your good friend Andrew will be fielding the blog this week. I thought it might be a good idea for us to take some time to discuss one of the fundamental combat mechanics in Monster Hunter: RAGE! All monsters (Except our oddball friend Pariapuria) exhibit a rage mode, in which it becomes faster, stronger, and more terrifying.

Notable Rage Modes

Rajang MH4 Render======> 2ndGen-Rajang Render 002

Rajang transforms from a dull, brown beast into a raging, golden monstrosity. It exhibits boosted electrical attacks and more brutal melee combos.

3rdGen-Deviljho Render 001======> Deviljho MHP3rd Intro

When enraged, Deviljho's hide swells up and glows a menacing bright red. It is capable of breathing a stream of Dragon elemented gas, and becomes one of the most formidable opponents in the game.

MH4-Zamtrios Screenshot 002======> MH4-Zamtrios Screenshot 005

Zamtrios is a cauldron of transformation. In addition to being able to inflate its body to many times its normal size, it is known to adorn its body with a shimmering, spiny ice armour once it becomes enraged. Adding an extra layer of defense, this on-the-fly armour mode makes Zamtrios an extremely durable foe.

MHP3-Zinogre Render 001======> MH4-Zinogre Render 001

Once it has charged up enough electrical energy, Zinogre unleashes its full power, undergoing an electrifying transformation. All of its spines stand end on end, lightning bolts fly in all directions, and the beast becomes capable of a boatload of brand new attacks. A gamechanger, to say the least.

Gore Magala

MH4-Gore Magala Render 001======> MH4-Gore Magala Render 002

Gore Magala, when enraged, unfurls its 5th and 6th legs from its wings and springs forth its horns. i'm not sure if it actually does anything different during this state, but the visual upgrade is really awesome.

-Which is your favourite rage mode? Why? -Your least favourite? -If you could give an existing monster a better rage mode, which would it be and what would you add? -Do you think Capcom goes too far with any of the rage modes? -What do you value most in a rage mode? (Added attacks, visual differences, etc.)

Thanks a lot for reading!
