Hello my name is Dumah, I have been playing Monster Hunter since late 2005 or early 2006. My happening across this game franchise was completely by chance, I won't lie. I was living in a youth hostel with my friend Kay and we got bored of the games we currently had on PS2, so we headed out into town to see what we could find. I picked up this "Monster Hunter" game off the shelf and suggested we buy it, based on the fact that Capcom generally make good games (Resident Evil series, Dino Crisis series, Devil May Cry...). That was the start of it all - a chance encounter.
Soon enough we were both EXTREMELY into the game, taking it in turns for a few days until Kay got his own copy so he wouldn't have to to bother waiting, hehe. For about a 9 months to a year we played, honing our solo fighting skills on everything village mode had to offer, pretty much acing everything in our paths. But in time, we both slowly got bored because there was nothing left to do, no stones left unturned (or so it seemed).
One day I was just passing the time on the Wyverns of Land and Sky quest when I carved a "Rathalos Plate" from Rathalos's severed tail - I snorted the mouthful of coffee I had out through my nose in suprise, because I had never seen this item before. End quest I launch myself at the armour creation shop dude thing. This Plate is needed for a Rathalos Platebody+. Kay suggested this even stronger armour was found on the online servers. This angered us both because it appeared that taking Monster Hunter online on the PS2 was a difficult thing to do (this turned out to be wrong).
I didn't give up the ghost so easily, however, and on a whim I went round to my mum's house and jammed an ethernet cable into the back of my PS2, not hoping for much. Lo and behold I find myself connecting to the servers, which still had a reasonable amount of people online daily! (PS2 games online communities generally died out quickly after release). One quick bragging call to Kay later, I am running around a town, there's people talking, launching quests, hanging out. Epic wouldn't even begin to describe it.
So began the revival of both our Monster Hunter gameplay (I did say we got bored). Basically from this point until roughly two months before those servers closed, we played online. The pair of us (Dumah and Kay88) where quite well known and respected because we could hold our own in fights, and lead almost every quest to kickass victory. A small clan known as the Bowgun Brothers introduced me to Clust 2'ing with Heavy Bowguns (and almost recruited me), which is a tactic I use to this day, expensive as it may be.
Once the servers shut, I refused to play Monster Hunter in general for a while, I was furious at Capcom with their excuses about why they shut the servers. A company worth hundreds of millions of dollars, unable to find someone to keep the servers going?(or enable fans with the know-how to take over hosting) Riiiiiiight. Also add the fact that I wasn't playing around the time they shut, I didn't even know it had happened till a couple of weeks later, couldn't even take steps to keep in contact with mine and Kay's regular hunting crew...but I digress.
Eventually Kay convinced me to get a PSP and Monster Hunter Freedom 2 while he got one too, which we got through in a similar manner to the original. We both got Unite on the UK launch day, same story as Freedom 2. Around this point I began to get even more frustrated with Capcom because of the ridiculous amount of new Monster Hunter content that was getting Japan-only treatment, so I was done with Unite for a while - keeping my save for occasional play of course.
That pretty much brings us to where we are now, me and Kay got ourselves copies of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on May 18th 2012. Using this wiki, common sense and memory means that the fact that all the text is in Japanese isn't really slowing us down much =) I'm on this wiki to make friends, and possibly find my old friends from Monster Hunter 1 Red Lands (if they're still around).
