MH, MHF1, MH2, MHF2Edit

Taunt/Observance Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The Rathian will (like the Rathalos) lower its head and wip its tail around and growl at the hunter. This does damage with the tail if not careful

The Obsevance is when you strike the Rathian and it is unable to see you. It will quickly lift of the ground and turn around in circles until it notices the thing that hit it (aka hunter/cat/velocipray). It will land, if not careful it can land on the hunter and knock it back.

Rage Mode
The tail does a considerable amount of damage when a hunter is attacking it from the back or to the tail.
Evasive Maneuver

Keep away from the landing or the tail when happening.

Bite Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The Rathian will diagonally raise her head and then lower it and bite while doing 1 step forward. Her tail is also flung upwards in a diagonal fashion and can damage the hunter as well if he/she is hit by it.

This is an attack that is rarely performed under normal circumstances, it is more common when the monster is flashed.

Rage Mode
Nothing worth mentioning.
Evasive Maneuver

Guard if necessary or move out of the way. It's an attack that is highly unlikely to hit you under any circumstances though and even if it does it only deals minor damage.

Charge Attack & Triple Charge Attack Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

A reasonably fast attack where the Rathian will directly run at the hunter in an attempt to damage him/her, covering a large distance if the hunter is far away (although if far enough the Rathian will fall before reaching the hunter) with a pretty wide hitbox. After the hunter is passed the charge will result in the monster falling, leaving it open to attacks for a few seconds.

The charge is always preceded by 2 quick 90 degree turns (or 1, depending on where you stand as long as it isn't in front of her) if it is going to be performed after another attack.

The charge has a variation where the Rathian will follow the hunter during the charge, which indicates that the charge will be performed 3 times in a row before the Rathian will finally trip.

This attack can also be performed without warning after any other attack if the hunter is directly in front of the Rathian.

Rage Mode
The triple charge becomes more likely to occur and it becomes nigh-impossible to dodge with normal evasive methods.
Evasive Maneuver

Guard against the attack if possible, if not, run towards either side to get out of the way or merely prevent getting directly in front of the Rathian.

For the triple charge in rage mode, to dodge the attacks if you do not have the possibility to block, run sideways and dive a little bit earlier than usual to dodge the attack and get up in time to dodge the 2nd/3rd charge, if you wait till the last moment the next charge is guaranteed to hit you.

Fireball & Triple Fireball

Ailment Inflicted: Fire

Normal Mode

The Rathian will stand put, raise her head and then fling it forward and spit a fireball.

This attack has a variation where the Rathian will not spit 1 but 3 fireballs, which are shot in the following order: 1. Forward, 2. Right, 3. Left.

While performing this attack the Rathian is open to attacks for a few seconds, in fact, long enough to allow the player to do anything he likes.

Rage Mode
The triple fireball attack becomes a bit more common.
Evasive Maneuver

If within the path of the fireball(s) you should, if possible, block the attack and if that is not an option, run out of the way and dive if necessary. Players who have mastered timing their rolls can roll through a fireball instead. In general it is best to just avoid being anywhere in front of the Rathian if you want to prevent being hit by this attack.

Tail Spin Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The Rathian will merely turn approximately 90 degree, slamming anything within the radius with her tail. She can spin both clockwise and counter-clockwise. This attack can be performed multiple times.

A player can use the direction the monster spins in in order to create an opening to attack. This attack is usually performed at least twice in a row so the player can anticipate where a certain attack point will be after 2 turns and adjust his position accordingly.

Rage Mode
The attack only becomes faster, nothing else.
Evasive Maneuver

If possible, guard against the attack, if not, try to roll/run out of reach. It's not advised to attempt rolling through the attack unless you have perfect timing or evasion up skills.

Backflip & Double Backflip Ailment Inflicted: Poison StatusEffect05 KO StatusEffect-KO
Normal Mode

The Rathian will take 2 steps backward and then launch herself into the air with a backward summersault, hitting a Hunter with her tail and inflicting the Poison ailment. It also has a very high chance of stunning the Hunter. As soon as the backflip has been performed the Rathian will first hover in the air for a second before landing on the ground again.

If a hunter is under the Rathian and she lands the Hunter will be sent flying and take a little bit of damage, although if the Hunter is not under her he/she can use the 1 second the Rathian hovers as an opportunity to attack the tail. This attack has a variation where the initial backflip is followed up by a 2nd one as soon as she lands however the 2nd backflip will not be preceded by the 2 steps the 1st one is.

Rage Mode
The backflip and double backflip become a bit more common.
Evasive Maneuver

If possible, guard against the attack, if not, run/roll/dive out of the way. Hunters with perfect timing/evasion up skills can roll through the tail although the best way to avoid being hit is staying anywhere but in front of or close to her.

MHFU/MHP2GEdit

Instant Backflip Ailment Inflicted: Poison StatusEffect05 KO StatusEffect-KO
Normal Mode

A new addition to the Rathian's moveset, exclusive to the Nekoth and G-Rank (HR7+) Rathians. It is basically the same as a normal backflip but now it is performed after certain events without any warning, meaning the Rathian will not first do 2 steps before performing this attack. The Rathian is able to perform an instant backflip after doing her fireball attack and after she trips or falls out of the air. This attack can be curved.

Rage Mode
The attack becomes more likely to be performed.
Evasive Maneuver

If necessary, block if you have the possibility or run/roll/dive out of the way although it is best to anticipate this attack at any time after the aforementioned attacks that precede the instant backflip and make sure to either stay out of the way or in a position where to can safely roll out of the way at the last moment.

MHP3rdEdit

  • This section will only cover new attacks and modifications to attacks from previous generations.

GroundedEdit

Charge Attack & Triple Charge Attack Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The triple charge is now easier to dodge without necessarily having to dive and the turns before continuing the attack with the next charge are slightly slower, making it easier to dodge. Also new, since the 3rd generation the Rathian does not perform instant charges anymore.

Rage Mode
Nothing worth mentioning.
Evasive Maneuver

Unlike in the 2nd Generation, merely running out of the way and rolling if necessary will do the trick.

Fireball & Triple Fireball Ailment Inflicted: Fireblight Fire
Normal Mode

Unlike in previous installments the Rathian does not produce an inner-growl that indicated how many fireballs will be spit and the fireballs are slightly larger and can inflict the Fireblight status if the Hunter gets hit.

Rage Mode
Nothing worth mentioning.
Evasive Maneuver

Same as in the 2nd Generation section above.

Wyvernfire Ailment Inflicted: Fireblight Fire
Normal Mode

A variation of the original fireball where the Rathian will take a big leap backward while readying a more powerful fireball and then shoots it. This fireball scatters when it hits the ground and causes multiple explosions, covering a wide area.

Rage Mode
The triple wyvernfire becomes a bit more common.
Evasive Maneuver

You can block the attack although it is pretty risky due to the scatter effect of the attack may the fireball manage to hit the ground. If you can't block then either, if you're close, run diagonally into her direction or, if that is not an option, try to run/roll/dive out of reach.

Tail Spin Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Unlike in earlier installments, the tail spin now covers a bigger radius per time, between the 140 and 180 degrees. The spins are also abit faster which makes rolling through the attack without much evasive skill a whole lot easier.

Rage Mode
Nothing worth mentioning.
Evasive Maneuver

If possible, guard against the attack, if not, try to roll/run out of reach. It's not advised to attempt rolling through the attack unless you have perfect timing or evasion up skills.

Backflip & Double Backflip Ailment Inflicted: Poison StatusEffect-Poison StatusEffect-KO
Normal Mode

The attack is identical to what it was in earlier installments with the exception of the tail stretching out considerably, increasing it's reach dramatically. The backflip is either performed as an independent move, possible to be followed up by a 2nd backflip but also as an attack that the Rathian does in order to go airborne and perform aerial attacks.

Rage Mode
Nothing worth mentioning.
Evasive Maneuver

Same as in the 2nd Generation section above.

AirborneEdit

Pin Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The Rathian will dive onto the hunter and pin him/her down with her legs and then start eating to recover stamina, dealing damage at each bite. The hunter can struggle himself out of the pin attack and other hunters/comrades can free the hunter by either staggering her or throwing a flash/dung bomb.

Rage Mode
Nothing worth mentioning.
Evasive Maneuver

Block the attack if possible, if not, roll/run/dive out of the way. The attack is pretty straightforward however so basically preventing yourself from being/staying in front of her is enough to prevent getting pinned down.

Aerial Bite

Ailment Inflicted: none at all

Normal Mode

The Rathian will close the distance, hover above the hunter for a moment and then bite (almost peck) at whatever is under her.

Rage Mode
Nothing worth mentioning.
Evasive Maneuver

Block/Roll the attack if necessary. It's highly unlikely this will hit you though.

Aerial Dive Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The Rathian will move violently at first while hovering at one spot and then sent herself diving torwards the hunter. This attack always results in the Rathian landing as it is how the attack ends. This attack is not a lock-on move until the moment the Rathian starts the actual dive.

Rage Mode
Nothing worth mentioning.
Evasive Maneuver

If possible, block the attack, if not, run/roll out of the way by increasing the distance while you can and then moving sideways. If necessary you can also dive out of the way.

Backflip & Double Backflip Ailment Inflicted: Poison StatusEffect-Poison KO StatusEffect-KO
Normal Mode

Basically an aerial version of the normal backflip. Can be performed twice in a row as well and that is usually indicated by the Rathian staying airborne after performing the initial backflip. Can usually be anticipated by the Rathian closing in to point black range while hovering.

Rage Mode
Nothing worth mentioning.
Evasive Maneuver

Same as for the grounded backflip. Keep an eye out for the indicator of a possible 2nd backflip.
