Jungle Menace

From Monster Hunter Wiki

The Yian Kut-Ku, although a small beginning monster for many hunters, is still a quick, aggressive monster and may knock you out if not careful. It's hide is not all that strong, but if your weapon's sharpness gauge is in the yellow, a good percentage of attacks will bounce back. This is the first wyvern most beginner hunters will face, and for a good reason. While this is the weakest wyvern in the game, It is quick, agile and will teach beginning hunters the basic fundementals of hunting majority of the wyverns in the game. The frame of the Yian Kut Ku is used widely for most of the other wyverns in the series, such as the Blue Yian Kut Ku, Yian Garuga, Gypceros, Rathalos, etc, with either little or big changes made to enhance performance and difficulty.

[edit] Yian Kut-Ku Attacks

  • Peck Attack

The Yian Kut-Ku will attack with its beak. It will peck three times with a short lunge. not difficult to dodge unless your directly in front of him and just recovered. Don't block unless you are full on stamina. It attacks consecutively, so it will take a toll on your stamina gauge.

  • Leaping Peck Attack

Similar to the three peck attack, this time, the Yian Kut-Ku will leap towards you, and execute this move.

  • Bite Attack

It will crane its neck left in an attempt to bite you. Watch out for its tail. It can whiplash you if you're not careful.

  • Fire Ball

The Yian Kut-Ku will spit out a ball of fire which has a small area of damage, but it will deal quite a lot of damage. The attack travels across a short distance, and the explosive radius is small. There are times where it will spit four out instead of the normal one. During that time it is open for a barrage of attacks. Roll out of the way or dodge to negate the attack.

  • Charge

The Yian Kut-Ku will charge head first at you and then trip and lay defenseless for a few seconds. It will also spit fire balls as its head is swinging. If you dodge the intital charge, great. But you are still in risk if it manages to get a fireball out. This attack is harder to dodge, but if successful you will have a few seconds to attack it without fail.

  • Tail Attack

The Yian Kut-Ku will execute two, one hundred and eighty degree turns, starting from its right, causing its tail to whip you. This attack can either be difficult to dodge, depending where you're attacking from, can easily be seen if you're attack its left, and easily avoidable by dodging in between its legs.

  • Air Dive (Low)

When it's turning to face the player, it'll take off towards the player in a attempt to topple the player. Easily avoidable by dodging to either side of the incoming Yian Kut Ku.

  • Air Dive (High)

Very rarely will it execute this move, generally occurs if the player attacks it when just about to land, and has not spotted the player. The Yian Kut Ku will circle around in the air and spot the player, keep your eyes on it, it'll come diving down at the player. Best avoided by sprinting away and executing a dive, or getting near a wall toward it's inbound trajectory, concealing yourself from it.

  • Rage Hop

When in Rage, It'll hop a couple of times into the air, flapping it's wings, quarking. At this point in time, It can cause damage if you're directly beneath him.

  • Chicken Run

Usually seen doing this when fleeing the area, the Yian Kut-Ku will run, bobbing his head and wings spread in the air, made in the image of frightening anything in it's way by enlarging it's stature. There are two forms of this, In the case of him turning towards the player, it'll run up to the player, and follow up with a 'Bite Attack'. In the case of it turning away from a player, It's attempting to flee. Do not get in the way of it while it's running, it will plow right through you.

[edit] Important Tips

  • Keeping your eyes on the target and obstacles is very important. Example of target would be the Yian Kut Ku in the level. An example of obstacles would be other monsters in the area that can intervene, and generally get in the way.
  • Always use a Paintball to track it! Losing your target can send you on a goose chase easily!
  • Sonic bombs will not always work. If it is in an enraged state, it will not be effected. In addition, should you break off it's ears, small bombs and sonic bombs will have no effect.
  • You can catch the Yian Kut-Ku. Note that you can only do it when your target is weak. A good indication of weakness is that the Yian Kut-Ku will fold its ears back. Use a Shock or a Pitfall trap to disable it and throw two Tranq Bombs (Tranquilizer + Bomb Material) To put it to sleep. Following that will be a message that says you completed the quest. By doing this, you gain more materials at the end.
  • If you are doing this quest for the first time, it will be in Area 6. If not, check Areas 1 & 2. If it is not in those areas, use you Phychoserum. Take note that the ESP ability only lasts for about three seconds.
  • Flash Bomb (Flash Bug + Bomb Material) can temporarily blind monsters. However, be aware that it's still capable of attacking.
  • In the case of slaying a Yian Kut Ku, when it is resting, it takes extra damage. Large Barrel Bombs can be useful in this case.
  • When the Kut Ku starts limping you could always throw an extra sonic bomb to stop him from running away, when he has stopped you should put the shock trap under him then throw the Tranq bombs
