The Hornetaur are small, beetle-like insectoids found in all Monster Hunter games. Like the Vespoid, they are highly susceptible to poison. Due to their small size, they are very hard to hit directly. Hornetaurs will frequently attack the hunter in groups, making it very tedious to fight other monsters in the area. If hit with normal weapons, these monsters will frequently shatter completely.

Typically, using a poison-attribute weapon or Poison Coating with a Bow is the only way to kill and carve the Hornetaur without having them explode and be uncarvable. Poison Smoke Bombs are also useful in getting multiple Hornetaurs poisoned all at once. Hornetaurs tend to get stronger in G-ranked quests and can withstand the poison effect a little longer. You can also try kicking them.

[edit] Battle

The Hornetaur are really never a threat. In groups they result out to at maximum an annoyance. Hornetaur carvings, like Vespoid carvings are very rare and can even be NPCed for a good bit. One of the only ways to slay the beast without it shattering in a blast of insect fluid is to use the extremely useful Poison Smoke Bombs. Make them with rather common materials Bomb Material and toadstool if you want to harness their essences. A quick slash or two/bullet or two/charge or two/etc. can easily rid the pest if carving is not what you want.
