Great Maccao are scavengers that feed on the corpses and eggs belonging to larger predators. Though primarily scavengers, Great Maccao will also feed on smaller animal species. These scavengers have to compete with larger carnivorous monsters like Glavenus, Tigrex, and Rathian.
Only male Maccao or Great Maccao have the feathers on their head. A Great Maccao's tail is just like a kangaroo's tail. Its tail allows it to propel itself forward and jump with tremendous force. It even can stand on its tail with its whole body's weight. While standing on its tail, a Great Maccao shows off its colorful red underbelly. The red underbelly is warning colors to scare potential threats. Though its tail is an important tool, once its tail is broken, Great Maccao are heavily handicapped by them due to using their tail for many attacks and movements. Even if the tail is broken, Great Maccao can still use their unusual hands. These hands are in a shape that doesn't allow them to grab prey, rather they're in a shape used for holding eggs and punching foes.
Great Maccao are shy monsters that prefer to stay away from most threats. Despite Great Maccao being the leader of the Maccao pack, it barely has any control of the Maccao, compared to other Bird Wyverns, and rarely tries to help its pack from danger. Great Maccao would rather run than fight with their pack and their pack would rather run than fight with their leader.
