Chameleos is a large, chameleon-like Elder Dragon introduced in Monster Hunter 2.

MH4U-Chameleos Render 001

Physiology

Chameleos's body is covered by a purple and white hide. Its head is also large, flat, and has a spiked "crest" with a horn at the tip of the head, which can be broken for extra rewards. Its eyes are similar to a chameleon's eyes; large and orb-like with the ability to freely move separate from each other. Its tongue can be stretched, making it very long and able to steal items from Hunters. Its wings are purple color with a grayish white membrane, though they are only used when moving to another area and during its poison jump attack. Chameleos's tail is large and shaped like a leaf, with a chameleon-like curled spiral at the end.

Abilities

Chameleos has the special ability to camouflage, making its body completely invisible, though it is sometimes seen with a fast shine of light. However, when Chameleos's tail is severed and its horn is destroyed, its ability to camouflage becomes disabled. Chameleos can inflict Poison, spitting out acid blobs which cause your defense to lower, and breathing out gas that inflicts Fatigue, which makes the hunter run out of stamina. Its tail can blow a High Pressure wind (Much like Kushala Daora's wind barrier).

Behavior

Little is known about Chameleos's behavior, but rare sightings claim it is peaceful and often avoids combat unless necessary.

Habitat

Chameleos is found in tropical & subtropical places, like the Jungle and Forest and Hills. Occasionally it can be found in the Swamp.

Other Non-Subspecies Forms

Hard Core (HC) Chameleos

FrontierGen-HC Chameleos Render 001

HC Chameleos has a pinkish tint on its body and different color spikes. It gains new moves, including a combo move were it launches the Hunter into the air towards it, then spits poison at them in mid-air. In addition strange spurts of greenish-gas appear in the area around Chameleos.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 / Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
MHFU-Chameleos Icon Eyewitness sightings of this Elder Dragon are extremely rare due to its ability to literally vanish; however, details of this are unclear. It is thought that shocking it may make it reappear, but this is unproven.

Notes

  • Chameleos are poisonous and acidic; they can spit an acid blob (which lowers defense), spray acid (drains stamina, causing fatigue) and spray a poisonous cloud whenever they glide.
  • Chameleos is very sensitive to Fire Element on the chest, front legs and tail. Dragon element is more effective on the wings, whilst everywhere else on the body takes equal damage from both Elements.
  • Cutting the tail and breaking the horn causes its camouflage effect to stop. Dragon Element is needed to break Chameleos' horn, while the tail can only be cut once Chameleos is at a total of 30% health.
  • Chameleos have sticky tongues, allowing Chameleos to steal items off the hunter.
  • Throwing a Smoke Bomb on Chameleos will temporarily make it visible.
  • A much more economical way to locate Chameleos after it's gone invisible is simply to run around in circles and watch how the hunter reacts. Even though Chameleos can't be seen, the hunter will run normally when headed in Chameleos's direction, and panic-run in any other direction.
    • Felyne Comrades will always know where Chameleos is, even when invisible.
    • Flash Bombs thrown in front of Chameleos do not make it visible, but they help locate its head due to the stars going around its face.
  • Chameleos can be poisoned, despite the fact it uses poison attacks itself. The poison damages Chameleos and helps to locate its head whilst it remains invisible.
  • Sonic Bombs detonating near Chameleos while it is in the middle of an attack cause it to flinch and turn it completely visible for roughly 1 minute. There is also a chance that Chameleos will drop a Shiny when this happens. This can be done regardless of whether Chameleos is in Rage Mode or not.
  • When Chameleos is beating its tail on the ground, it will try to steal an item immediately after finishing.
  • Despite its namesake, its appearance is based off of Uroplatus (leaf-tailed geckos)
  • Chameleos's theme will only play when it is enraged.
  • The area Chameleos is in will light up if the hunter has the Autotracker skill, but the Elder Dragon itself will not appear on the map.
  • Chameleos is a bit off to real-life Chameleons since it can move very fast unlike the Chameleon's slow nature. However, when no danger is present, Chameleos tends to move slowly and cautiously while camouflaged, much like real-life Chameleons.
  • Chameleos is one of the 4 "True Elder Dragons", alongside Kushala Daora, Lunastra, and Teostra, seeing as it, along with the other 3, isn't giant with its own area or is using a giant arena to be fought in.

  • Chameleos gains the ability to cover the whole area in a fog.
  • Unlike previous games, the music starts to play at the beginning of the battle instead of just when enraged.
  • Chameleos' poison blobs can leave clouds of poison that Chameleos can manipulate using its wings.

  • Chameleos has a new status called "Vocal Cord Paralysis Poison" that causes the hunter to be unable to speak/chat in game along with stamina loss like fatigue.
