Chameleos Discussion SYMBOL Talk

Chameleos is a large, chameleon-like Elder Dragon introduced in Monster Hunter 2.

MH4U-Chameleos Render 001

Chameleos's body is covered by a purple and white hide, and its head ends with a protruding horn at the tip of its nose. Its eyes are similar to a real life chameleon's; large and orb-like, with the ability to control eye movement individually. The long and elastic tongue can extend to grasp and steal items from a distance. Its wings are a purple color with a grayish white membrane, and are used for flight and controlling the direction of its poison fog. Chameleos's large tail is reminiscent of a leaf and has a curled, spiraling tip.

Chameleos has the ability to camouflage itself by using the electric currents running through its skin, refracting light in the mist and thus making its body invisible. This camouflaging ability is disabled if its horn is broken, and the tail severed. Known for using mist for protection, Chameleos's breath can create a thick fog to impair visibility as well as form dangerous toxic clouds. The stretching tongue is adept at stealing items from hunters, though this can be prevented with the Anti-Theft skill. It can also spit out acid blobs to reduce defense, and expel gas that inflicts stamina-lowering fatigue. Fanning its tail, it can cause High Pressure wind (much like Kushala Daora's wind barrier).

Little is known about Chameleos's behavior, but rare sightings claim it is peaceful and often avoids combat unless necessary.

Chameleos is found in tropical and subtropical locations, like the Jungle and Forest and Hills. Occasionally, it has been sighted in the Swamp.

Other Non-Subspecies Forms

Hard Core (HC) Chameleos

FrontierGen-HC Chameleos Render 001

HC Chameleos has a pinkish tint on its body and different colored spikes. It gains new moves, including a combo move where it launches the hunter into the air towards it, then spits poison at them in midair. In addition, strange clouds of green gas appear in the area around Chameleos.

In-Game Description

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 / Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
MHFU-Chameleos Icon Eyewitness sightings of this Elder Dragon are extremely rare due to its ability to literally vanish; however, details of this are unclear. It is thought that shocking it may make it reappear, but this is unproven.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
MH4U-Chameleos Icon Precious few sightings of this elder dragon have been recorded, leading to claims it can vanish into its environment like a chameleon -- hence its name. Witnesses report attacks can come out of nowhere, but that Smoke Bombs keep the beast visible.

  • Chameleos is very sensitive to Fire Element on the chest, front legs and tail. Dragon element is more effective on the wings, whilst everywhere else on the body takes equal damage from both Elements.
  • Cutting the tail and breaking the horn causes its camouflage effect to stop. Dragon Element is needed to break Chameleos' horn, while the tail can only be cut once Chameleos has less than 30% health left.
  • Chameleos have sticky tongues, allowing them to steal items off the hunter.
  • Throwing a Smoke Bomb at Chameleos will temporarily make it visible.
  • A much more economical way to locate Chameleos after it has gone invisible is simply to run around in circles and watch how the hunter reacts. Even though Chameleos can't be seen, the hunter will run normally when headed in Chameleos's direction, and panic-run in any other direction.
    • Felyne Comrades will always know where Chameleos is, even when invisible.
    • Flash Bombs thrown in front of Chameleos do not make it visible, but they help locate its head due to the stars circling its face.
  • Despite it using poison attacks itself, Chameleos can be poisoned. The poison deals damage and helps locate its head whilst invisible.
  • Sonic Bombs detonating near Chameleos while it is in the middle of an attack cause it to flinch and turn it completely visible for roughly one minute. There is also a chance that Chameleos may drop a shiny when this happens. This can be done regardless of whether Chameleos is in Rage Mode or not.
  • When Chameleos beats its tail on the ground, it will try to steal an item immediately after finishing.
  • Despite its namesake, its appearance is based off of Uroplatus (leaf-tailed geckos)
  • Prior to Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, Chameleos's battle theme only played when it was enraged.
  • The area Chameleos is in will light up if the hunter has the Autotracker skill, but the Elder Dragon itself will not appear on the map.
  • Chameleos is a bit off to real-life Chameleons since it can move very fast unlike the Chameleon's slow nature. However, when no danger is present, Chameleos tends to move slowly and cautiously while camouflaged, much like real-life Chameleons.

  • Dragon element is no longer required to break its horn.
  • Chameleos gains the ability to cover the whole area in a fog when enraged.
    • Chameleos can only become invisible when the fog is present.
  • Unlike previous games, the battle music plays constantly regardless of whether Chameleos is enraged or not. To indicate rage, Chameleos will now cover the entire area in a dense mist, which also makes the music sound muffled.
  • Chameleos' poison spit leaves toxic clouds that Chameleos can manipulate with the wind generated by its wings.
  • Chameleos can no longer inflict the Fatigue or Defense Down ailments.

  • Chameleos has a new status called Vocal Cord Paralysis that causes the hunter to be unable to speak/chat in game along with stamina loss like fatigue.
