Black Gravios are the tougher subspecies of the Gravios. Black Gravios' are accustomed to using their beam attacks more often than their grey counterparts. They also only rarely use the sleeping gas that normal Gravios use; they usually only emit explosive red gas. They have a heavier shell than the normal Gravios, which gives hunters more trouble getting through their hide with weapons. In Monster Hunter Freedom 2 some parts of a Black Gravios are so strong that even a weapon with white sharpness cannot penetrate it easily.

Known for its infamous "Roar and Lava Beam" combo.

Prior to 2nd G is was famous for doing nothing but lava beam and charge.

A set of armor with High Grade Earplug is recommended. After it uses its beam attack, it has a 60% chance of releasing an explosive gas from its underbody (a black smoke will come out prior to the red heat gas, giving you advance warning). This means it may be wise to 'play it safe' and move away from the Black Gravios immediately after it uses its beam attack. While doing a beam attack, the sound that it makes will vary. The higher the pitch, the more likely that the explosive cloud won't be released. This can give you a slight warning to get away or get closer to attack.

Using ranged weapons, Black Gravios becomes incredibly easy to defeat as long as you manage to dodge his beam attacks.

As with most Wyverns, its tail can be cut off.
